Tasks don't split when one or more assignments 100% complete

Hi,

We have come across a situation where tasks which have started early in
relation to their predecessors no longer split so that the remaining work
continues only after the predecessor task is planned to complete.

For example suppose we have two tasks A and B linked FS. Both tasks have 3
resouces assigned. But task B starts early relative to the finish of A. If
we reschedule the remaining work on task A, then normally we would expect
task B to split and for the remining work to be rescheduled in line with the
delay in remaining work on A.

BUT if one of the resources on Task B has finished and their assignment
shows as 100% complete, and we try the same thing then Task B des not split.

We can't figure out why - can anyone please explain this logic please?

Thanks

James

Hello James,

MS Project does display a split on a task bar only when all the ressources
stop working the same day(s).
You said that one resource completed his/her work 100%. So this resource
didn't stop working.
Look at the Task Usage view to observe that the assignment of the other
resource has been split.

Gerard,

Thanks for your input but my issue relates to what happens when you try to
reschedule the outstading work on a predecessor task, but the successor task
starts early.

So lets say Bill starts Task B early and finishes on day 5. Task B is a 10
day task. Task A (also 10 days) was originally linked to Task B FS. But
Bill started his assignment 5 days early.

At Day 7 of Task A (which was 10 days ago as at todays date) we want to
reshedule the outstanding work and use the reschedule work option. In this
instance Task B does not show a split, even though the outstanding work has
moved to todays date on both Task A, and the oustanding work for all other
assignments on Task B has moved to today plus 3 days. The task does not
show a split.

If Bill had not finished his assignment work then the task does show a
split.

I can't really explain the behaviour I am seeing - but if you have a more
detailed explanation I'd appreciate it.

I am just trying to figure out what the difference is between Bill having
not finished his assignment but the task DOES show a spilt versus when Bill
has finished his assignment but now the task does not show a split, even
though no work is scheduled during some of those days where the split would
normally be.

James

James,

Could you send me the excerpt of your project with these configuration ?
Remove the NOSPAM on my email.
