Task's duration won't change from 0 days

I am having an issue with MS Project that I have never seen.

The task will not let me change the duration. The task will let me
type a number of days into the duration field but when I hit ok the
task goes back to 0 days. Certain activities keep wanting to be a
milestone.

What is going on here?

I'm figuring it's something that will be able to be fixed in a couple
of minutes.

Thanks,

Lou

It's not in a linked file is it?

If not, what view are you using?

The only links in the schedule are all within the file.

No external links exist from what I see.

The file belongs to a co-worker and I'm trying to help her out.

There are no resources in the schedule either.

After messing with it for a little bit I found that if I change the
task type to fixed duration, then it lets me change the durations.
The only thing that is weird to me is that there are many other
activities that are set as fixed units that will let me change their
duration but there is around 25 line items that need to be changed to
fixed duration.
