Team Members can open MS Project from PWA [2007]

Hello,

I have noticed that team members can open MS Project from the Project Center
screen. We are using MS Project 2007 and my concern is that they can not
only open MS Project but can publish a project to the server.

The following permissions are turned on (everything else is off):

Categories
-Create new task or assignment
-Create object links
-View Project Details in Project Center
-View Project Summary in Project Center
-View Project Workspace
-View Resource Assignments in Assignment Views

Global Permissions

-Contribute to Project Web Access
-Download Project Web Access Outlook Add-In
-Log On
-Manage Personal Notifications
-New Task Assignment
-Reassign Task
-Edit Status Report Responses
-Self-assign team tasks

Could someone tell me if one of these is allowing the team members to open
project or if there is something else I can do?

By the way, we even added a hard deny to "Open Project" and they can still
open the project.

Your team members don't actually have Microsoft Project 2007 on their
desktop, do they? If they don't have the software, then they CANNOT open
and edit projects, so don't worry about it. Hope this helps.

Hi Dale,

Thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately some of our resources are
located in outside departments and they do have MS Project so this could
potentially cause issues for us in the future.

If they don't have the Open Project permission in any Group/Category
combination, they can't even get to first base. So, I think the default
permissions in Project Server 2007 will take care of your problem. Hope
this helps.

Hi Dale,

They are only in one group and category... Team Members/My Tasks.... "Open
Project" has a hard "Deny".

I am really having a tough time keeping everyone motivated about the system
as we are constantly running into issues. Can you recommend someone that
could possible do a diagnostic look at a customers system? We already have
used two consulting firms...we would rather have someone from
MSProjectExperts (hint, hint...) I am trying to sell this to my company.

If you set a Deny permission on the Open Project permission in the My Tasks
category in the Team Members group, DO NOT add any of your project managers
to the Team Members group. If you do, none of them will be able to open any
project in which they are a team member. Remember that permissions are
cumulative across all of the Groups to which a user belongs. Beause of
this, I would recommend you use a Not Allowed permission for the Open
Project permission in the My Tasks category of the Team Members group. It
will have the same effect on people who are only members of that Group, but
it won't screw up permissions for people who are members of multiple Groups
that include the Team Members group.

Regarding our services, you will need to contact Jennifer Herman, our VP of
Client Services. Refer to the first URL in my signature block for the
information to contact us. I'm sure we could find some way to assist you
(hint, hint). :)
