technical issues with installing Microsoft Office 97

QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS
Message: I am a small business man and have Microsoft Works 7.0 on my dell
pc which has XP as an operating system. This should be recognised by the
Office 97 Professional Edition that I bought off ebay recently. I have tried
to access information on how I can install the software I bought which should
still be able to install.

I have looked at the weblinks and I still am having problems installing the
upgrade I have. The link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/158069/EN-US/
clearly states that all versions of MSWorks should qualify as upgrade
products and MS Works 7.0 is not recognised during the installation process.
I have had no problems using it, though the installation problem could be due
to an error in the MS Works 7.0 which can not be corrected by reinstallation.

Can you advise any further. I have tried manually identifying the qualifying
product in the C/program files folder and MS Windows upgrade is not able to
recognise the MS Works 7.0 as being installed? Is there a simple solution to
my problem?

I would be grateful for a further swift reply.

Except that "all versions" in KB158069 only means those versions that
pre-date Office 97. I don't know what the "current" version of Works
was in 1997, but I seem to recall that Works 5 came out in 2000, so
you'll probably need something older than Works 5.

After having used Offfice 2000 for many years without a hitch, I am having
major problems. I cannot open Word anymore (Excel and Outlook work fine).
Wheh I try to, I get the message "Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered
a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." The info
is simply "winword.exe."

I have (1) run two virus checkers several times as well as a registry
cleaner and (2) I have uninstalled and re-installed Office 2000 several
times, and (3) I have "repaired" Offcie 2000. All without luck. I cannot open
Word.

I am running XP on a two week-old Dell.

What can I do? Maybe one of the initialization files for Office has been
corrupted? Does UNinstall get rid of EVERYTHING??

Please help.
