Temp file creation problem

Hi.

Having trouble with the above. I have several "virtual folders"
which are synched with corresponding folders on the server.
Everything works fine as long as i'm connected to the network, but
if i'm offline (using a laptop), whenever i try to open a new
document from these folders, the temp file creation process somehow
goes wrong, word freezes, as does the operating system.
The ~$???????.doc temp file is created in the same folder, and
because it stays there, the next time i try to open the
corresponding document again, it works fine. Only the first time
when it's trying to create the temp file does the freeze occur.

So, my question, is there a way to tell word, excel etc to not
create the temp file in the same directory as the original, but for
example in c:\temp? If not, is there a way to tell it not to create
them at all? Or any other workaround, of course, if you've come
across this one before.

I've eliminated virus software etc from the equasion, it's
definitely just the word or excel of powerpoint which causes the
problem.

You could try Tools, Options, Save, Make local copy. Might help, YMMV.
