Temp files- can they be read?

My only saved version of a Word 2002 file (Windows XP) is
the 'temp' file- don't ask why- A student did it!
So the file name is ~$xxxx.
We are trying to recover this file but even
using 'Recover Text from any File' type, it doesn't have
anything recognziable in it- in fact anything much at all.
Is there any hope?

Hi Ruth,

IIRC, ~$*.* are owner files, which don't contain useful text.

If the file size is less than about 20 kB, there isn't much hope, anyway.
That's the size of an empty Word document.

You might search your hard disk if you find other temporary files (~WR*.tmp,
~*.doc) that contain something useable.
Look at the file size and date/time stamp to decide if the file is worth
looking into. In case you are lucky, the file should open fine in Word, with
all formatting preserved.
If Word suggests "plain text" or "encoded text" when opening the temp file,
there isn't much hope. It then usually doesn't help either to open temp
files with the "Recover text from any file" import filter.
