Template categories

I'm sure this is easy for someone, I just can't seem to get my head around
this one. I have Windows XP Pro and Word 2003.

In previous versions of Word, I was able to place my templates into the
different categores provided in the New Template dialog box. i.e. Letters and
Faxes, Memos, Other Documents. I am having a difficult time doing that in
2003. They all land in the General categories (tab).

All documenation I can find says that those other categories (tabs) are
folders in the c:\documents and settings\name\application
data\microsoft\template path. I'm supposed to be able to move the templates
from one folder to another. If I want to create a new "tab", simply create
a new folder in the template folder. However, when I do that the only thing
that shows up is an email icon.

Any ideas?

I have that information, thank you. The problem lies in the fact that the
tab does not show up. I'll run a repair and see if that fixes it.

A new folder will not display a tab until you put at least one template in
it. If you want templates to appear on the existing tabs, you must create a
folder with the exact same name as the tab label and put the templates
there.

Okay. Now when I place the template there, I see the tab. Thank you.

What about the pre-existing tabs. I can't seem to find them in the path so
I can place my new faxes and letters in that category? I've looked in
explorer and also when I am trying to save them.

As stated, you have to create a new folder with that exact name and put your
templates in it. If you want templates to appear on the built-in Letters &
Faxes tab, for example, you have to create a folder called Letters & Faxes
and put the templates there. This folder should be subfolder of your user
templates folder. This has nothing to do with where the built-in templates
are stored. Did you actually read the article at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=826867? It answers all these questions.
