template (dotx) behaving like document (docx)

In previous versions of Word, you could save templates anywhere and then when
you double-clicked on their icon in their window location, they would open
up a new
document (not a template) based on that template. Can this still be done in
Word 2007? I have only been able to get my templates to work properly (as
templates) by placing them in the workgroup location then opening a new
document from within Word. When you look at them in their Windows folder, in
any location other than the workgroup folder they have the dotx suffix but
have the docx icon (ie. they don't have the yellow line across the top
indicating that they are a template) and double-clicking on them opens the
template itself, not a new document based on the template - is there any way
to make it do this (ie. open a new document based on the template when it is
double-clicked)? I currently have heaps of templates all saved in various
folders according to their use - I don't really want to have to shift them
all into one folder. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and repaired Office
2007 a number of times - with no change. I am using it on Windows Vista. Am I
doing something wrong in the 'save' process or something else wrong? Any help
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :)
