Template for Labels in WORD

I have tried to print a page of labels (Avery J8651 - 65 labels per A4 page)
with only trouble.
I used the "labels" in WORD 2003, XP, with the proper label. The trouble
appears to be that Word has some problem with it's maths.The Avery A4 page
hold 13 labels down, each 21.1, plus top and Bottom margins of 0.9 each and
that is inside the 297mm of the sheet. Even when I reduce the label depth,
still WORD overflows the bottom row onto the next page, and of course
buggers the other 12 label spacings.
After initial problems, I created a new "Label" template, I called it
Label.DOT. Then after removing both header and footer, all formatting, the
paragraph settings to Zero, Zero, single line, I checked the Page layout
settings for proper margins as per the Avery sheet, etc.
But still the page layout View showed only 12 rows with the 13th row on the
next page, i.e., all the alignments are wrong.
Would some wonderful WORD brain please help me out.

Does it work if you start Word in its safe mode (Hold CTRL whilst starting
and click Yes at the prompt)
If so, you probably have a header/footer in your normal template.

Graham,

Thankyou for your quick reply.

Yes there is a header/footer in my NORMAL.dot, I know this causes trouble
with other labels.

I THOUGHT I had got rid of it when I striped the style, but apparently I
have not stripped it out.

Please how do I get rid of the header footer?

Unfortunately, if you have ever had a header/footer in Normal.dot, it's
there for good unless you rename Normal.dot and start from scratch (for more
on this, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm). But you can
correct the problem for a given sheet of labels by setting header and footer
margins to 0.

Thanks for the info re modifying the Normal.Dot. But that's Not the way to
go for me.

I need header/footers in all my docs EXCEPT a labels template. Also I
believe that the normal template also holds data for excel as well. I do not
want to strip the normal.dot.
So can you come up with a way to TOTALLY strip my labels.dot (template), of
header/footer styles?.

Okay, I understand not wanting to ditch Normal.dot (I've never had to and
hope I never do have to), but you will have to recreate the label template
without the header/footer paragraph. The simplest approach would be just to
set the header and footer margins in the template to 0 cm. That can be done
easily enough and will do the trick, even though it won't actually remove
the empty header/footer.

The other approach is to rename Normal.dot temporarily. After restarting
Word (with a default Normal.dot), do whatever you did to create the label
template in the first place. I'm guessing you started with Envelopes and
Labels, chose a label definition, and used New Document to create the
template. If so, do this again. If you started from a blank document, you
can do that. If the table used for the labels is very complex, you could
create a new document based on the existing template, select and copy the
table, and paste it into your new document. When you're done, save the new
document as a template (you should be able to save it as Labels.dot, saving
over the old one).

Then quit Word, delete the plain-vanilla Normal.dot, and rename your renamed
Normal.dot back to Normal.dot. At this point, you should be where you
started except that you'll have a Labels.dot that doesn't have a header or
footer.

Starting Word in its safe mode should preclude the need for all that
renaming of templates. Hold the CTRL key whilst starting Word. Acknowledge
the prompt, then create the label template. Frankly I think you would be
better renaming normal.dot and using document templates for your documents
rather than normal.dot.

Agreed about the document templates. I don't know if the OP would want the
overhead of restarting in Safe Mode just to produce labels. I know I
wouldn't. I start Word first thing in the morning and, barring mishap, don't
shut it down till I go to bed at night.

Brilliant, I have re created my LABEL.DOT, copied the table across, and then
saved as a Label template.
All this brings to light the number of times that I have had trouble with a
"you beaut" Avery (etc) template. Looking back I now realise that it has
been the footer/heater margin that has thrown things, so in future I will
when printing out a full page of labels, use the blank (Labels) template.

My point was that it was less of an overhead than temporarily renaming
normal.dot while the label template was created. Either way you would have
to close Word.

Ah, I see what you're saying now: to use Safe Mode not to create the labels
but to create Label.dot. Good point.
