Template Issues

Hello Everyone,

I'd like to say thank you in advance for any help I may receive. While I have two issues brewing with Word 08. If the protocol is to list I'm using a MacBook Pro 2.2 Ghz, Intel Core Duo 2GB RAM if it matters. The MAC is new to me, so if the problems are easy solves, my apologies.

My first issue is with templates. I, like many nowadays, do much of my work online alleviating the need for printed stationery, saving the final file as a PDF to email rather than print and mail. As a result, I created a template in Word, saved it as the appropriate .dotx file and open it through the Project Gallery. When I reach a certain point of typing I lose both images that make up the stationery on the first page. I have locked them in place under the options, however it is frustrating because it's not there after a certain amount of text.

My second issue involves font compatibility. I contacted Microsoft and they were very quick to dismiss me (part of the reason I don't want to contact them about the above problem). The font is called Mom's Typewriter. It worked fine in Office 2004 Mac, and it works perfectly fine in Excel 08 and Powerpoint 08. In Word it reverts back to a default font. Any suggestions?

Thank you again for any help, much appreciated!

Best to All,
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Welcome to the Mac!

Re #1--losing images. What do you mean by "losing"? Do the images
move? If they vanish, can you see them in Print Preview? What's the
file format? Where are the images supposed to be?

The proper approach to using images for stationery on the first page is
to set up a template with a First Page Header and anchor the graphics in
the First Page Header--you can drag floating images to anywhere, but
make sure the cursor is in header when you Insert the image. This will
keep typed text from interfering with them. Did you set up your template
this way?

Re #2--font doesn't work. What do you mean by "reverts back to a
default font"? Can you see the font in the menu? (which menu) What do
you do, and what happens? Actually, I'd suggest you start a new post on
the font question, with more detail--both of these are complex questions
and joining them in the same thread is not the best idea.

Hell, yes, it matters! :) Welcome to the Mac. The first thing to
understand about Macs is that the Mac world is growing explosively, and the
days when all Macs were equal has long gone. Operating System version is
the most critical piece of information to us, but Word version and Service
Release level, along with processor type and memory amount are really
important also, when trying to diagnose problems.
My first issue is with templates.

Daiya has given you the best answer to that one :)
My second issue involves font compatibility. I contacted Microsoft and they
were very quick to dismiss me (part of the reason I don't want to contact them
about the above problem).

Sadly, call centre puffers are paid by "the number of calls completed per
shift" so they are going to drop the call as fast as possible if they don't
know the answer :)

What type of font is it? I can see that it is available all over the web.
However, I suspect some versions might be a bitmap font. Word will be
happier if you can come up with a Unicode version in .TTF or .OTF format.

Since it's free, you could come up with a replacement here:
http://cooltext.com/Fonts-Typewriter

Given that it is not a "Mac" font, it may appear out of alphabetic order in
your list: look carefully :) You have a very modern Mac, it will use "any"
kind of font there is, provided you place it in one of the correct font
folders. But some of the really off-the-planet variants may present a
challenge :)

Hope this helps

I'm experiencing the same problem with lost graphics for the stationery template. I have one at the top and one along the right side. When I flow text, the right side graphic disappears. How do I solve this problem?

The file can be downloaded from this link:

Sorry Nancy:

Without your version information, you've made the question impossible to
answer.

Cheers

Here's the information, please let me know if you need any additional:

Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac version 12.0.0
OSX 10.5.2
Intel MacPro

I also tried to work with this template in
Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac version 11.1 and experienced the same issue.

I would like to know how to delete a template formed under My Templates in Word 2008. I needed to replace the original with an improved version and found I could not delete the first one. Anybody got any ideas please. I have searched all the help routines but have not found anything.

Hi Nancy:

I suspect you have the graphics anchored to the wrong paragraph, and the
wrapping style is set wrongly.

But I can't get hold of your template to look, that URL is attempting to
open a file type that is not compatible with the browser.

So I can't really tell.

You need to anchor the graphics to a paragraph that does not move when you
insert text, and you need to set the wrapping style to something other than
"Inline with text" so that the text does not push the graphic around the
page.

Hope this helps

Hi Gavin -

Templates are no different than document files in this regard, so the
question is how you're trying to delete the template. OS X will not allow
you to delete *any* type of file from an Open or Save As dialog within a
program, nor can you delete a file from within the Project Gallery.

Use a Finder window to navigate to where the template is stored, then send
it to the Trash. Use a Spotlight search to locate it if necessary -
different versions save templates in different locations & templates can
also be stored elsewhere. (You don't specify your version of Word and I'm
not going to list a half-dozen possibilities.)

Alternatively you can either open the template file & save your changes
directly to it or you can save the other template with the same name as the
other & confirm OK to replacing the original file.
