Template Location

Hi: I am using Word 2002 as part of Office XP. I would like to manage the
Template area, but don't see the sub-folders in the Template folder in
Windows Explorer. They do appear on the File/New dialogue. Any ideas or help
appreciated.

Drives you nuts until you realize that the folder is hidden! <g> In Windows Explorer, select Tools > Folder Options, click the View tab, and select the Show Hidden Files and Folders radio button.

User templates are stored in a different folder from installed templates. To
understand this better, see “OFF2000: How Office 2000 Manages Templates” at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=240216 (general principles also apply to
Office XP), and also note that under Windows XP, the user templates folder
is a hidden folder, so you must have Windows set to show hidden files and
folders in order to find it.

I've done this, and still don't see the other folders. I only see the
Templates which are stored under the General tab...

I've un-hidden the files and folders, but still don't see the other Template
folders - I only see the files stored under the General tab.

Did you read the article? Most of the files stored under the General tab
(the standard installed templates) are in a different folder to the user
templates. Use Tools > Options > File Locations to check on the exact path
of your user templates folder, which will be under your user profile - you
generally need to select and browse from the File Locations list to see the
full path.

You cannot control any of the tabs for the installed templates. You can only
uninstall the templates. You can create new tabs of your own by creating
subfolders of the user templates folder (a tab will not show up until the
folder contains at least one template). If desired, you can copy some of the
installed templates into a folder of your own before uninstalling.
