template loses VB code when opened as new doc

how do i prevent vb code from getting lost from a .dot template? if
open word and then the template in word, it is fine. if i open th
template as a .doc, then the vb code i have behind a command butto
disappears. is there an option i am missing? actually, the cod
disappears when i try and go into design mode and view the code. the
its all gone. the code also disappears after a mail merge. thank
