Template placed in themes directory don't show up in Elements Gallery

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Per the online help:
placed filename.potx in directory users/username/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User templates/My Themes/

restarted Mac

theme shoudl have shown up in Elements Gallery under "custom themes;" it does not. It is accessible after clicking "browse," but in a file selection dialogue.

Works here - without a restart of the Mac, just a new launch of PPt.

Is Office fully updated (12.1.5)? How about OS X (10.5.6)? Try repairing
disk permissions as well.

If that doesn't remedy the situation what additional details can you supply?

Oh, well, the Autoupdate installer script - "Preparing Office 2008 SP1 Update (12.1.0) appears to be hung. Now what?

As a side note, no answer necessary here, since it is out of context, but - why??? Why is the installation process, the user experience, so different for MS products on OS X than any other OS X software??? Why doesn't two-finger scroll work in the preview pane in Entourage? Why do the apps crash frequently? And more.... Frustrating.
