Template query

I have asked this question on the word.general group but not had any
suggestions, so forgive me for trying it again here in the hope that
someone can tell me what may be happening.

I'm using Word 2002 SP2. Very recently I've found that when I shut the
programme down, it opens and then saves normal.dot after closing the
document in use and before closing the programme. This is no great
problem -- except that the top item in my most-recently-used files is
always normal.dot, which is irritating -- but I can't understand why
it should suddenly have started happening and what could be causing
it. I can find nothing in Help. Can anyone tell me what may be going
on, please?

John,

First you should have Tools>Options>Save>Prompt to Save Normal Template
checked. I would guess that your problem is an Addin. Have a look as
Tools>Templates and Addins and see if there is an Addin running that is
causing your problem.

The Word.general is an orphan newsgroup and doies not appear on the
Microsoft server. Few of the Microsoft acknowledged contributors access by a
route other than the Microsoft server and would not have seen your question.

Is this a networked company machine? If so it may be deliberate and you
should take this up with your IT support..

If not, then there is undoubtedly something calling the unwanted behaviour.
Look for an AutoClose macro or Greg's suggestion of an errant add-in.

Thanks to both Greg and Graham.

The problem seems to have been two items in the File menu referring to
OmniPage Pro 12 that were not removed when I upgraded to v.14 of that
program. Having got rid of those all now seems back to normal.

I take it that you removed the add-in that was placing these menu items?

I did indeed start by checking the add-ins, as advised. There weren't
any checked, and in any case none appeared to refer to OmniPage. I
also looked through the Registry to see if there was still any
reference to OmniPage 12 and there didn't seem to be. I wondered
whether the problem might be a "Print to PaperPort" entry in the Word
File menu (which can't be got rid of) or something to do with Office
Navigator, but the fact that's it's gone on getting ride of those two
references to OmniPage 12 does seem to indicate that was it.
