Template Replaced with Normal Dot

I'm having a bit of an issue with templates. If a document is created with a
template, custom toolbars and the like display normally. If a user uses
"Save As" to save the generated document, the base template remains attached.
However, if a document has already been saved and the user uses the "Save"
button or presses CTRL+S, the base template is replaced with Normal.dot and
then the document saves. Custom toolbars and macro access are lost, but
there are no formatting changes. I can reconnect the template using
Tools/Templates and Add-Ins, but it will again become disconnected when the
document is saved.

I'm using Word 2003 in a network environment. Templates are accessed both
directly from the server and through Word (user templates on the same
server). It's happening to all the templates I've tested. Documents are
saved on the same server, in the same drive, and even to the same folder
during tests.

On a network - WorkGroup Templates are best mapped , for example¨
T:TEMPLATES
Documents: K:DOCS (if you don't use doc management software)
Often it is preferable to download to Users Templates location on login/log
off with script Server templates for access speed purposes.

That aside, you need to uncheck Normal.dot Tools Options Save Prompt to Save
Normal Template. Otherwise you will be asked to update Templates as you are
being asked for any template when you or any users make changes to a
document that uses an attached template.

Also, turn off, if not already Tools Templates and Add-ins uncheck
¨Automatically update styles¨.

This should fix the problem.

Hi

This is obviously not normal behaviour. Do you have any kind of content
management system running? I seem to remember that one of the content
systems that lots of law firms use un-attaches the template on saving a
document.

Try starting Word by doing Start > Run and type "winword.exe /a" (no quotes,
note the space before the /a). That will prevent any addins running. If you
can save normally with Word in that mode, then you'll need to identify what
add in is causing the problem. This article includes information on how to
identify addins:

Hope this helps.

Right on the money! I have an add-in to allow creation of
GoldMine-compatible templates, and when it is taken out of the equation the
problem ends.

Thank you very much!

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, both options are already unchecked.
The problem's elsewhere.

Thanks for taking the time to reply - I do appreciate it.

It is never a good plan to allow Word to make automatic changes to
normal.dot, which is what will happen if you do this. That option should
always be checked. I trust that normal.dot is not being shared You cannot
share the Normal.dot file among multiple users in Word
