Template Size

Polly

I am looking for some help with a template. While I have
worked with templates quite a bit, I recently received one
that is 6MB in size. I have never seen a template this
size that is only a blank page when opened.

I have already made sure that fast saves, versioning, and
change tracking are turned off. In addition, there are no
autotext entries in this template.

Can anyone suggest what else I should be looking for to
reduce the file size? Otherwise, can someone explain why
this document might have reached this size?

Thanks.

Saving a preview (an option some like to use for templates so they show in
the File > New dialog) can be a problem - though this still sounds huge for
a blank page.

No preview saved either.

Someone on another list offered a way to basically create
a new template; however, that solution means losing all
the style information stored in the original template.

Is there anyway to rescue this template without having to
recreate the styles?

Yes, you can use the Organizer. Create a fresh template,
and while it's open click Tools-> Macros-> Macro-> Organizer,
and in whichever side of the dialog doesn't show your fresh
template, open your 6MB template and transfer the components.

But I can't imagine there Are 6MB worth of styles. The only
other possibility is macros, and you don't mention them. Do
you see any?

There are a number of reasons for excessive file size, including:

1. Fast Saves: Disable this at on the Save tab of Tools | Options.

2. Preview Picture: Clear the check box on the Summary tab of File |
Properties.

3. Versions (File | Versions): Make sure "Automatically save version on
close" is not turned on.

4. Revisions (Tools | Track Changes):
Highlight Changes: Make sure "Highlight changes on screen" is turned on.
Accept/Reject Changes: If "Accept All" or "Reject All" is available then
revisions are present; accept or reject all changes, then turn Track Changes
off.

5. Embedded True Type fonts (Tools | Options | Save); embedding fonts should
be avoided wherever possible.

6. Embedded graphics: When feasible, it is preferable to link the graphics.

7. Document corruption: See
