Template trouble

Vick

I have a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X Version 10.4.8. I am running
Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac Version 11.3 (061213). I visited the
website http://word.mvps.org/mac/Using-Windows-Templates.html and
followed exactly the directions listed in How to Use General Microsoft
Office Downloads with Office:Mac. Everything works fine until I try
to open the template....when I try to open it as instructed, I get the
following error message:

Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use or might
not be a valid Word Document. (01018642.dot)

Can anyone please help me. I can send you the file.

Thanks,
Vickie

You need to tell us which template you tried. We can't search the Microsoft
site for the numeric ID, they won't let us: you need to give us the name.

It is possible that the file is still locked because Stuffit still has it
open. Quit Stuffit and see if it is OK now.

You may have picked up an Office 2007 template, or a template containing an
embedded object from an application that does not exist on the Mac. In
which case you can't go any further: Word 2004 can't open those.

Give me the name of the template you were asking for and I'll check it out
for you.

Cheers

There is an extra space in the URL--delete that after copying/pasting,
or type it directly in with no spaces and it comes up fine for me in Safari.

Little_Creature, how sweet of you to do that. :)

Thanks so much for pointing out the space. My eyesite is not as good
as it once was. I was able to access the link and found the file.
Now "How do I download it?" This is what I done:

I downloaded it to my desktop and when I did it created the file
name:
01018642.dot.txt Is this OK? What extension should the file have
when I copy it to My Templates folder? I have read all the info in
the user group concerning templates. I am able to open the template
in Word but I am not sure that it is working correctly. It opens up
with all the pages of the template displayed. How do I get it to
display one page at a time and be able to edit the page?

I know you all must think I am so stupid about this and I do apologize
for my short comings. Thanks so much for your help. This group is
great.

Thanks,
Vickie

Hi Vickie,

It should have the .dot extension when you copy it to My Templates.

I did a control-click and selected Download Linked File. Then I found
the downloaded file in the Finder and I deleted the .txt from the
filename. Then it opened for me as a Word document. I closed it again,
as that opened the template itself rather than creating a new document
based on the template.

After copying the .dot to My Templates, use File | Project Gallery to
create a new document based on it. If it shows up many pages at once,
just use View | Zoom to change the Zoom to "whole page" or 100%. You
should be able to edit it fine once it is big enough to see.

No stupid questions--this is a ridiculously complicated procedure that
shouldn't be necessary at all.

No problem--I was figuring it wasn't your ideal time for newsgroup
posting. :)

Just by the way--when I clicked on the link in Safari (Tiger), it did
give me a screen full of gibberish, which I've seen Safari do before. I
had to get around it with right-click, download file, which had the .txt
name, and then delete the .txt. Probably some browser oddities.

Vickie,

If you are creating a family cookbook, you might want to check out
www.familycookbookproject.com. It is a Website specifically designed
to help people collect, organize and print family cookbooks. I used it
for my family cookbook.

Best wishes,

Bill Rice
