template with style numbering now giving problems in 2003

I have created a template using styles which I have customised with a
specific format and layout. This template was originally created in '97 and
worked perfectly in 2000, but now in 2003 it is giving problems. It kept the
format and layout, but you can't see the numbers even if you re-apply the
style. If I check the number format of the style in use, the numbering has
defaulted to "none". I can change all the styles back to the numbered style
of my choice, but the problem is that half the staff are on 2000 and the
other half on 2003. If someone creates a document from this template in 2003
it works fine, but after you have saved and closed it and open it again, the
numbers are gone (this is all on 2003). Basically the problem is 2003
defaulting my number style to "none". How can I prevent this from happening?

I have no experience with your particular problem, but here's two
general suggestions to try:

1. Make sure "Automatically update document styles" is cleared in the
Tools>Templates and Add-Ins dialog box.

2. Then set up numbering as described at
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html.
