I want to edit the normal.dot so that when i open a new
document A4 is the default paper size (it is currently set
to letter size) however when i make the changes and try
to save it as normal.dot is says it can not save the
changes as the document is already open!!!!

Any ideas on how i can make the required changes?

File | Page Setup. Change the paper size to A4 and press the Default...
button. But you'll have more success if this size is also selected as the
default in your printer driver (printer Properties).
