Templates and Cross-Project Dependencies

Erik Klitzner

I just wanted to confirm what I believe. Templates that are created from
projects that have cross-project dependencies (i.e. predecessors and
successors in other projects) will retain the dependency info from the
projects from which they were created. New Projects that are created from
these templates will also retain the depenencies to/from the original
projects.

This is an issue for organizations that have large programs that they want
to bake into a set of templates. The process of creating templates would
require breaking all of these cross-project dependencies and then re-creating
them when a new set of projects are created from the templates.

Is there any guidance on how to make this process simpler or less error prone?
Thanks,
Erik

Wen there are cross project file linkages, the links will maintain themselves
as the files are moved. This gets quite tedious, especially if the two files
are moved to different locations (the links break).

In such cases, we make certain to place all project files that depend on
eachother into exactly one folder. The folder is assumed to be "the project"
and must travel intact with all its subodinate files. We hanve Project
Folders, not project files.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the reply. This makes total sense when the projects are all
stored as .mpp files. I am working with projects and templates saved to
Project Server, I should have been clearer and posted in the Project Server
group. If you have any guidance in this area, it would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Erik
