Templates can't be saved as .doc files

If I start to edit a template in Word 2004 and try to save it as a doc, it won't
let this happen. It insists on saving it only as a (now modified) .dot
template, and it always wants to default to the "My Templates" folder.

How do you start from a template and end up with a .doc file?

Use File | Project Gallery. Select My Templates in the left column, and your
templates should show up in the right (I don't have any yet, but they
should). Select and click Open or whatever the option is. This will create a
doc from your template.
