Templates not showing toolbars

Hi,

We are using Word X (10.1.5) with Mac OS Panther clients.

I have some custom templates which are used by 20 or so users in our
office. They were created for us by a 3rd party. They are located on a
server and work fine across the network.

However, many of our users will be getting laptops very soon and I
need to make the templates available to the users locally under
Panther so they can use them outside the office. This was not a
problme with OS9 laptops.

The templates work by having a Normal.dot file open with a custom menu
bar with buttons which open the other templates.

The problem is, if I move the templates folder to a local folder on
the hard drive the normal.dot file is ignored and the menu bar does
not appear.

I have tried giving rw access to everyone for everything in the
templates folder, no success. I have tries lots of different locations
for the templates folder, eg. MSOffiec folder, My Documents, Desktop,
MS User Data with no luck.

How can I get the custom menu bar to show when a new document is
created in Word with local templates?

Thanks,

b.

Hi Buckster,

First let me suggest that you attach this Custom Toolbar to a Custom
Template rather than to Normal.dot. Since Normal has a bad habit of
corrupting occasionally and needing to be replaced, storing the toolbar in a
custom template is a lot safer.

Secondly, for some cockamamie reason, the .dot extension used after the
Normal template makes it invisible in current versions of MacWord. If you
remove the extension, Word should be able to find Normal.

However, you can make any template universally available by turning it into
a Global Template and that's what I suggest you do after locating your
toolbar in a custom template. To do that, go to Tools menu> Templates and
Add-Ins. Click the Add button, navigate to the template that holds the
toolbar and select it. It will now appear in the Global Templates & Add-Ins
box. Make sure it's checked.
