Templates, UNCs and hanging

I've got thousands of word documents on my network. Most
of them were created using templates. I upgraded my
file/print server several months ago. As soon as I did
this, thousands of documents "broke". The documents will
open after 4-5 minutes each. Once open, I go to tools ->
Templates and Add-ins. I see that in the Document
Templates section it reads something
like "\\oldserver\share\template.dot". Well, \\oldserver
doesn't exist anymore. When I delete that reference to
the template on a server that no longer exists, save and
reopen the document, it opens right up. It's like Word
is going out and looking for oldserver, not finding it,
and then timing out after a few minutes. Like I said, I
know how to fix it, but there has got to be a better
way. How do I get word to give up sooner, or not try and
find the originating template at all so my users don't
have to wait so long on each document?

We're using a mix of Office 2000 and 2002, as well as
Windows XP and 2000 Pro, files hosted on Win 2000
Server. I've noticed that this situation is not as bad
on Windows 2000 machines. It still waits for a while,
but it only waits like 2 minutes instead of 4 before
timing out.

Anybody seen this before or know what to do about it?
