Templates - Word 2002

Helen

So I created this lovely template for our Action Plan by following Mr.
McGhie's tome and as I was writing the document I was feeling almost fond of
Word. But then I discovered, as I wrote, that I needed some lists with
subsets.

I attempted to modify the appropriate List levels to fit my template. After
a bit of wrestling, I managed to accomplish this. HOWEVER, I can't get the
numbering to restart with each section.

Header
1)
a)
b)

At one point I got the lightning bolt drop down giving me the option to
Restart Numbering. But sometimes it showed up on the first line under a
Header and sometimes elsewhere in the list. And sometimes it didn't show up
at all! So I tried Select All Instances and now I have the numbers running 1
through 10 (interspersed with four Headers) and a through ff.

If I could Reveal Codes, I could probably figure out how to fix this
problem. But I can't. Because it's not WPerfect.

So Wise & Wonderful MVPs, tell me what to do!

Helen,

By section - do you mean Insert a "Section Break".

If your template is set to Start at 1 for numbering when you insert a
"Section Break" and you press shortcut keys ALT 1 for Level 1 numbering it
will restart automatically at 1:
1.
11
(a) Insert Break Section Break

Then Level 1 Level styles whatever you have set them to be will restart at 1
automatically with a section break in place:
1.
1.1.
(a)
If you do not want section breaks because you are not writing section
documents (margins do not change etc) you should be able to right click in
heading Level 1 and Restart Numbering each time you wish to begin from Level
1.

If you are only running 2 or 3 different restart levels or in your case 3
since you can have 9 levels you should be able to run three separate auto
restarts - just build the template on its own first and make sure it is
working properly and you have all 9 Outline Levels attached to their styles
set up properly: Begin at Level 1 and work through to Level 9 methodically
otherwise it will not work properly. Always make sure you type some test
text at each level on the page and keep it there as you work through
building your level styles 1-9 then save as a xxxxx.dot template and open it
and check it and clear the entire page of text then if it is working
properly resave the new template and then attach this template to your
corrupt document 's template. It will work because you should being using
the same Style names for each Level 1 through 9.

Level 1 2 3 1 1.1 a a
Level 4 5 1 a
Level 6 7 1 a
Level 8 9 1 a

If you right click on document and select "Save Target As" and change ".doc"
to ".dot" extension you will have a sample template to look out - it might
help you see Word numbering in a new light:
