Recently someone has been messing about with the template in Word and
consequently when Word is opened there appears to be a square box at the
beginning of the document. I have increased the font to
500 point in Times New Roman and it is definitely a box rather something
resembling a box. This box can not be deleted until a few spaces have been
inserted before the box then you can press the delete key and it will
disappear. Apart from this being very annoying, where we are comparing files
on line, all the files are show as having differences even if this is the
only difference. Ideally what I would like to do is to find out what I can do
to stop this box appearing on the template. I would also like to point out
that I am working in an area that is still using Word 97.Can anyone point me
in the right direction? Thanks in advance for any help.

is this box outside the normal paragraph's left margin? Then it could be
a non-printable sign indicating that in Format | Paragraph | Layout, one
of the following is ticked:
- Keep Lines Together
- Keep With Next
- Page Break Before

If that's the case, then this is simply a difference in formatting. You
can toggle the visibility of displaying non-printable paragraphs by
clicking the pilcrow sign in the toolbar, or via Tools | Options | View ...

Robert,

Apologies for not getting back sooner. My password expired and I had to sort
this out when I went home.

The box in question appears in the main body of the document (at the left)
as opposed to in the margin. I have checked what you suggested and the only
option ticked is Window/Orphan control.

No worries, that's one of the good part of this sort of "forums" -- you
can come back any time you like! :)

It sounds like a real bullet, then (I prefer square bullets myself :)).
What's the style of this paragraph? What version are you working in?
When the whole paragraph with this box is selected, does anything happen
when you hit CTRL-Q?

Greetings
Robert

Robert,

I did as you suggested i.e. highlighted the box and did Ctrl & Q and that
did nothing at all. I hope this helps.

that means the box is either no bullet, or then part of the paragraph
style of this paragraph.

Hit CTRL-SHIFT-N (applies "Normal" style) to see if this changes something.

Word 97, hmm, in the help menu, there was a topic ("What's this",
maybe?) which allowed you to click on a character and get font,
paragraph, and style information. Try it if you can.
