templates

What is considered best practice with many users using the same template:

1. Changing each computer's copy of Word so that the default
startup/templates folders are a network location
2. Creating a startup routine that looks to see if the network template has
changed and then downloading/installing it on each computer.

At what number of users does 1. start to fail?

Another question: I have a autoexec block that checks the Windows logon
credentials against a Access record; if the credentials are in the security
table, then an add in is loaded. This was done to prevent unauthorized
access to resources via the add in. Does this make sense? Is there a better
way?

Better still is option 3. Put the shared templates in a network folder and
set each user's Workgroup Templates (Tools > Options > File Locations) to
point to that folder. That way users can have their own personal templates
and their own normal.dot.

Your autoexec method doesn't sound very secure, but perhaps it doesn't need
to be.

You should not be sharing the normal.dot template. That means you should not
be sharing a user templates folder. You can share workgroup templates
folders to share document templates. There are other ways to share
customizations. See http://addbalance.com/word/movetotemplate.htm for
step-by-step instructions on moving / sharing / copying / backing-up
customizations including AutoText, AutoCorrect, keyboard assignments,
toolbars, macros, etc.
