Word 2004 for Mac

I created a document template and save it as a .dot file.
When I use that template to create another document, I am unable to save
the file a .doc file. My memory of how it should go is not that.
My recollection (several Words versions back -- 4.0? 5.1?) is that 1) I
HAD to "save as"; i.e., "save" was not an option and 2) the file would
be saved as a 'document' rather than a 'template' file.

Am I nuts? Oh, in 2004, my only option is to save as a .dot file. That
doesn't make sense to me. What am I missing, please?
Thanks,
Barb

You gotta get Word in the right mood. This stuff is on the verge of
going sentient.

Tippy toe up to your template by opening a new file via the gallery
(cmd-shift-P). Find where you hid your template, and choose it.

That way you can trick Word into making a new .doc based on it.

If you just march straight up and open it without involving the
gallery, Word thinks you want to change the template, which is what you
are seeing.

The old way was more straightforward. But that is what every ex-5.1
user always says. About everything. You wanna save the world, cure
cancer and kick long driving drop-kicks? You should have used Word
5.1a!

I guess somebody thought they were making it easier.

Ho hum.
