Templates

Version: 2004 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I am having difficulty using Templates in Word 04 for Mac. I am using templates previously developed on the PC. I can open them, and they look right, but I can't then save documents built from them as word documents (only as templates).
I can also get access to them by usint the Tools/Templates & Add-ins commands and checking them in the dialog box. This successfully changes my toolbars. However, my macros cannot be used. If I try to open one or run them, Word just freezes and I need to force quit. Ironically, if I open the templates directly, I can use the macros without difficulty. However, I can't save the document as a word document.

I'd very much appreciate a pointer as to how I can get templates to work as they're supposed to - I'd like to choose a template when I create a new document, and then be able to save the document as a word document.

Hi Ed:

You cannot use Templates by double-clicking in Word 2004. In Word 2004, a
double-click is an "Open" command. It opens the original.

What you need is the "New File from Template" command, which got omitted
from Word 2004.

Instead, you need to place your templates in your My Templates folder (it's
the only template location 2004 can use) and then you must go in through
File>Project Gallery in Word.

In the New tab, navigate to the template you want, then choose the template
and choose "Open". This time, it will create a new document based on the
template you selected.

Check the title bar of the new document: it should be saying "Document 2" or
whatever, which means it has correctly created a new file with a Document
structure which is based on the template you selected. If it shows the name
of the template, you did it wrong and opened the template file instead.

Chances are your macros contain "ActiveDocument" commands. If they do, they
will fail if you open the template the wrong way, because you will get the
template file instead of a document file: the files have a different
internal structure. ActiveDocument fails in a Template file, because the
active file is "not" a "document".

Some of your macros will fail in Word 2004 anyway, because Word 2004 is two
or three levels behind Word PC. You may find you need to code around some
statements that will error at compile time.

Hope this helps
