Templets

Where can I find word templets that I can open in Word 2008.

There are so many templets on Micro Soft's sight for Word 2007 etc.
but I can not use them. I can not even open one.

The few templets on Mactopia are of no value to me. I have Word 2004
which came to me before they finished it.
Office 2008 is much better but has no word templets.

I also am trying to open a file made on Office 2007. It is a .PUB
file. I guess created in publisher which does not exist in Office
2008.

How can I open the .PUB file?

Hi George,

All Word templates that do not contain macros or use Active-X controls
should work just fine in Word 2008. Most of the templates on Microsoft's
site contain either, so most will work just fine. The problem for Mac
users is that the site checks for a valid copy of Office using the
office validation scheme that is used in Office for Windows. Since
Microsoft trusts us Mac users to be honest, there's no validation scheme
for Office for Mac. Which means the Microsoft web site doesn't know that
you are a legitimate owner of Office, and won't let you download most of
the templates. The only work-around I know of is to use a Windows
computer that has a valid copy of Office on it and use it to download
the templates, then move them to your Mac.

Publisher can save files in Word format. You can't open an .pub in
Office for Mac, so ask the person who sent you the Publisher file to use
Save-As and save it in Word format, instead.

Hi George;

1- Although I don't mean to put word in Jim's mouth, in his second sentence
I believe he meant "neither" rather than "either".

2- The problem with the MS site is for real, but it's a just matter of
operating system compatibility which only prevents the **Automatic**
download process from working. When you select a template to download you'll
be presented with a "Template Download Problem" page... Scroll down & click
the 'Download Now" button to manually start the download. [I've also found
that some versions of Firefox may have "redirect" issues, but if you're
using the most current update of Safari you should be fine.]

If you download any from the Win Office site follow the directions here to
use the file which is downloaded as a .cab not recognized by Mac OS:

http://word.mvps.org/mac/Using-Windows-Templates.html

Additionally, there are virtually no templates on the Mactopia site because
the majority are included with the Office 2008 software - IOW, you already
have them on your HD. Office 2008 includes more templates than were supplied
with Office 2004... Have you looked in File> Project Gallery - New? Office
2008 can also use the templates that were supplied with Office 2004.

As for the PUB file, I don't contradict what Jim wrote but I wouldn't hold
out high hopes for a very usable result. What Publisher actually spews forth
is a conglomeration of text boxes in a helter-skelter array scattered among
section breaks in a "document' saved in Word file format. It depends on the
content & structure of the PUB file, but I've seldom seen anything other
than 'last resort desperation' results produced. I've usually had better
results by changing the filename extension to .docx [one of the *rare* times
I can justify doing so] & opening the file in Word using the "Recover text
from any file" method. You don't recover any graphics [which you may not get
from the Publisher output to Word either] but it's faster & easier to clear
out the additional stuff & reformat with your own styles & insert fresh
graphics than have to deal with what Publisher dumps out :)
