Temporary files are not deleted after closing Word 2002

Hello,

Has anyone experienced some temporary files is saved as .doc files after
closing Word? I noticed the icon: only the paper page with the top right
corner fold down portion is grey out. However, if double-click, it will
open as a document with several lines of funny characters.

This is Office XP on Windows 98 SE.

So far, deleting them does not cause any problem. Just really wonder why
those temp files were not deleted as it should (Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article - 211632.)
