Temporary Files - Excel 2003

Have just installed excel 2003 on a new PC, whenever a
workbook is changed and saved, a .tmp file is created in
the same folder which opens in excel as the same workbook
before the save.
The .tmp files contain the full excel file name & then
random letters & numbers.
e.g. book1.xls~12345.tmp

Excel does not save files with .tmp extension. It does create temp files that
have random alphanumeric names.

What AV are you using and how is it set to run? Does it check every file at
open and save?
