Terrible pause when moving between files

Hi,

I've consulted many people but can't get an answer on
this problem. Is there any expert there who can help?

Whenever I open a new file, or switch windows between
WORD files, the program stalls/pauses for about 5-8
seconds. No other functions (or programs) stall or pause
in this manner.

Because I always have 2 or 3 files open, it's extremely
annoying but I can't explain it. I don't think it's a
memory issue because I've done the same in Excel with
huge files without a problem.

I have a similar problem but figured it was just because my computer is
three years old and has what is, by current standards, a pretty slow
processor.

Word is very hard on both graphics and printer drivers. Make sure that these
are both up to date. If that fails, tell us something about your computer
please. Also, when switching document windows, do you get any disk activity?
