Text Box in table woes. :(

J

JOE

I am trying to place a drawn text box inside a table cell and it does all kinds of strange things

This is Word 2002 SP3 running on XP Pro SP1

I have a table with 4 columns and 6 rows. Text is entered in the cells. I try to place a text box in a cell and first, the text in that cell jumps to the top of the cell?. I try and copy/paste the text box and move it to another cell and as soon as it crosses a cell border, it disappears

I cannot use the Control object text box because the printercopy machine, I am using at work, prints these as a question mark

I have tried just about every combination of settings available in the Format Text Box dialog. If I turn off Word Wrap, the text box, which is square, turns into a rectangular box

Any ideas

Why are you trying to put a text box in a table?

Thanks for the reply.
I am placing a text box in forms that is an option for students to either check or leave blank on a printed form

As I explained in my original message, the copy machine that I have at work will not print a box when using the Control Text Box object, so I have to use a text box to simulate the check box

I saw a message from you, on Google, in a reply to a similar situation (this was from about 2 years ago) that suggested turning off word wrap in the text box properties, but this does not work in Word 2002

Any help you can give would be appreciated

Are you talking about a text form field or the kind of text box you insert
from the Drawing toolbar (or Insert menu)? If you're just wanting to create
a check box, there are plenty of other ways to do it. My favorite way is
with an EQ \x field (using several nonbreak spaces).

The text box that is problematic for printing is the one located on the Control Toolbox. It simply refuses to print properly on the printer that I mentioned earlier. The text box that I am trying to use is the one that is located on the Drawing Toolbar

Could you explain "My favorite way is with an EQ \x field (using several nonbreak spaces)." in a little more detail

Thank

Jo

The EQ field and its various switches is well documented in Word's Help. The
\x switch puts a box around the text you include as an argument. If you use
spaces, you get an empty box.

Another alternative is to use the check box from the Forms toolbar. If
you intend only to print the document, and not to use it as an online
form, there's no need to protect the document for forms.

The behavior Joe is describing is the same problem I am having with my arrows. This seems to have to do with an intentional relationship between any drawing object and the tables. Where can we get more information about that? I have tried looking in Help, but I must not be asking the right questions or using the right key words.

I also have the same problem with the arrows. You are right about any drawn object not working correctly when used in a table. Suzanne was correct about there being a lot of information about the Equation Editor, but I don't think the answer lies there. You would think that something as simple as using a text box or an arrow would be easy enough for a program like Word to handle

The issue is that objects in the drawing layer cannot be in table cells in
some Word versions.

Suzanne, is there a work-around? It all worked fine in Word 97, and in Word 2000, but now that I have 2003 - problems! It does seem to work if I make my drawing object outside the table, then cut/copy and paste them - sometimes pasting several times, after which they all appear at once - and then move one to where I want it and delete the others. It sure is annoying to have to do it that way, but I am not inclined to go back over several 200+-page manuals and undo all the tables, so I guess I will just have to live with it. The other thing I have been doing is incorporating arrows, circles, etc. into the graphics themselves as much as possible

Interesting that you used the word "layer." I will search for more in the Knowledge Base and also use that word when looking in the Help files

Thanks
Mary Lee
