text boxes cause extra pages

I am attempting to finish my dissertation in MS Word. It
contains text boxes having figures and captions. When I
insert page numbers or modify text, the document blows up
to phenomenal proportions. It places one line per page
for hundreds of pages. What is wrong. I need to finish my
dissertation.

Seems to work fine if headers/footers are edited rather
than using Insert -> Page Numbers
