Text boxes don't show up as tracked changes

In Word 12.1.9 (OS X 10.5.7), in Tools>Track Changes>Compare Documents,
changes to a .doc show up fine as usual, but text boxes I added in the
left-hand margin (with text in them) don't.

Any way around this?
