Text boxes in XL 2008

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I've been given an excel template created in XL2003 (PC) which has a couple of text boxes in. The boxes are locked for size but not for text editing however I am unable to write in them. In XL2004 they can be used successfully. What can I do please? I don't normally have incompatibility issues between PC & MAC.
