Can I set the default properties for text boxes in MS Word 2003, i.e. border,
background color,etc.

Set up one manually exactly as you want it. Right-click its edge. Select
'Set Autoshape defaults'.

Another approach is to define the formatted textbox as an autotext entry.
This has the advantage that you can also define the style for the text
within the box.

It also has the advantage that you don't change the defaults for *all*
AutoShapes. Many users want text boxes with No Line and No Fill, but
AutoShapes with No Line and No Fill are not much use.
