Text changes in one text box when typing in another

Using MS Word 2002. When typing text in text box A, the text in text box B,
in an entirely different part of the document, is replaced with the text I've
just typed in text box A. It doesn't even inform me that this is happening: I
just discover it by chance when checking through the document later. I've
checked them and the boxes are not linked. I'd like to know:

a) how to stop this happening
b) if possible, how to check through all the text boxes in the document
(there are at least a hundred) by skipping to each one automatically in order
to check this hasn't happened elsewhere without my noticing it. When I click
on a text box the 'Next Text Box' or 'Previous Text Box' icons are not
available to me in the Text Box Toolbar - I would've thought this would be
the way to check them all, but can't because of this.

Thanks in advance.

UPDATE: just noticed that also, when I create a new text box, another one
(without a border) seems to be created on the same page. When I type in the
one I've created, only the first letter appears in it, and all the letters -
including the first - appear in the one I didn't create. According to the
toolbar they are not linked to each other: it offers to let me link the boxes
but not to break a link.
