text contracts into a single space on Word 2003

This is an intermittent, very weird problem. When opening a previously saved document, whole paragraphs of text are contracted into a single space. this is seen on screen and the document also prints the same way. It doesn't affect any text fields and when viewed in reading layout it appears normal. The document opens normally on another computer. sometimes closing and reopening stops it, but not always.

I have installed latest patches.

Delete and reinstall the printer driver making sure that you have the latest
available from the printer manufacturer.

Thanks. Tried this, but it still does it...

From your description of the fault, it may be that the font is corrupt on
that computer. Try changing it to a different font (on another computer) and
see if it opens properly. If so, replace the corrupt font.
