Text controls and their labels

How can I disassociate a text box and it's label, permanently? (I know that
there is some keystroke combination that lets me temporarily select the
label, so I can pull it away and resize it and stuff.)

What is the keystroke that lets me do the above? I only ever stumble on it.
Can't reproduce it.

Is there a setting that prevents labels from being created with their text
boxes?

Does Format/Group and Format/UnGroup apply here? If so, why have I never
seen them enabled? (I also experimented to see if they really applied to
Option Groups... but stil can't get them enabled.)

Select the label and then "Cut" it to the Windows Clipboard (Ctl-X) then select
the form section and "paste" (Ctl-V) it back. It will now be a stand-alone
label.
