Text Converter

Every time I try to open a wpd file I get the following error message: The
selected text converter is an old version which will not work with the
current version of Word. Reinstall the converter and try again." I have
reinstalled many times with no success. How can I get rid of the "old
version" that is causing this problem?

Which version of Word will it not work? The old filters should still work
with Word 2000-2003, unless Microsoft has slipped in yet another damned
update to prevent them working.

For Word 2007 you will probably have to remove the old filters manually.

The filters themselves are stored in the folder:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\TextConv
and there are associated registry entries that make them available. You will
have to remove both the filters and the associated registry entries
manually. In the case of the WP6 filter the file you need to remove is
wpft632.cnv - renamke it to wpft632.old
and the registry entry that needs removing is
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Text
Converters\Import\WordPerfect6x]
"Path"="C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Microsoft
Shared\\Textconv\\wpft632.cnv"
"Extensions"="doc wpd"
"Name"="WordPerfect 6.x"

You should then re-install the Office 2007 filters. If the Office 2007
installation says that the WP filter is installed then uninstall it and
reinstall it again.

I am using Office 2003 which came installed on my computer, so I don't
understand how I could have "an old version which will not work with the
current version of Word". I did have Word 97 on my previous computer so maybe
something from that got transferred to this computer and is the "old version"
the error message refers to.

Thannks for the suggestion, but the converter pack didn't work. I have a
laptop also running Office 3000 and it opens the file just fine, but my main
PC still gives me the error message in my original post.

Did you happen to notice Graham Mayor's reply? I suspect that you'll have to
do what he described (quoting what he said):

=============================================
The filters themselves are stored in the folder:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\TextConv
and there are associated registry entries that make them available. You will
have to remove both the filters and the associated registry entries
manually. In the case of the WP6 filter the file you need to remove is

and the registry entry that needs removing is
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Text

"Path"="C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Microsoft
Shared\\Textconv\\wpft632.cnv"
"Extensions"="doc wpd"
"Name"="WordPerfect 6.x"

You should then re-install the Office 2007 filters. If the Office 2007
installation says that the WP filter is installed then uninstall it and
reinstall it again.
===============================================

I can't tell from your previous message if you already tried what Graham
said, and it didn't work, or if you missed it.

Tried Graham Mayor's deletion suggestion and then downloaded the converter
pack that you suggested. Yippee it worked! Thanks to both of you.

Sometimes, it takes teamwork. ;-)

Glad you're in business. Mind you... the WP conversion isn't wonderful, but
not getting an error message when you try is certainly better.

I would try installing this converter pack and see if it fixes the
problem:
