text display quality

Having lost out when Adobe dropped Framemaker for the Mac, I've been
comparing Word, Nisus Express, and Mellel. One of the differences
among them is that the text display quality is far better in the
latter two than in Word.

Is there any particular reason for this? Is this something that might
be improved in the next version, or some later version?

Thanks.

Hi,

It's been announced that Word 2004 will support UniCode. I would imagine
that the way the new version renders text will be different from the old
version in order to support UniCode. We'll know for sure as soon as the
product hits the shelves!

Hi Bob:

Word uses the standard Apple system calls to display text. There are some
issues with that in Word X.

I think you will notice a big improvement in Word 2004.

There is goodness to be had by fiddling with your display resolution and
text smoothing settings too, if you can.

Cheers
