Text drops out when printing!

M

Mike McNeil

What I see on my screen:

I have placed text boxes over other boxes which are used as
frames and background colors. This is a title page. I use
"bring to front" on the text boxes and "send to back" on
the background boxes. The text boxes have been formatted
with no lines and no fill so that the text floats on the
background box colors. I group all of the boxes, including
some jpeg images. Everything appears correctly on the monitor.

The problem:

Only the text disappears on the printed page. If I convert
the document to an Adobe Acrobat file, I see the same
problem, no text.

What am I doing wrong? This is the one case I have observed
where "what you see is not what you get."

I am now using Word 97 on a Windows XP system, but I have
seen the same problem with 2000 ME.

Do you see the objects in Print Preview? Do you have "Drawing objects"
checked on the Print tab of Tools | Options?

Dear Suzanne,

"Yes" to both of your questions.

I have had trouble with this in the past, deleted and
re-created some of the objects and the problem mysteriously
(to me) disappeared. This latest problem occurred on the
same page when I used a fill color on a bacground box and
added another box without fill to make an external border.
The floating print in front of the boxes is visible in all
cases on my monitor but refuses to show up in print or
convert to a pdf file. Ungrouping and sending the print
boxes to the front, and regrouping, does no good.

I really appreciate your help, and I look forward to your
suggestions.

Dear Suzanne,

I just got the text to print by ungrouping all of the
objects. Grouping the objects makes the text disappear only
in the printing. I would like to be able to print the
grouped objects. Does this give you a clue as to what I'm
doing wrong in the grouping?

Kindest regards,

Mike

I haven't a clue because I don't have much experience with graphics, but
perhaps Bob Buckland will come 'round and solve your problem.

Hi Mike,

What is the build number of Word in Help=>About?
(unfortunately Word/Office 97 doesn't retain all
of its updating if you've changed installed features
in Word through the control panel)

What printer are you using (postscript/non?)

What font are you using for the text.

Dear Thomas,

Thank you for your recommendation. It sounds like a good idea. I'll
give it a try.
