Text highlighter behaviour

A chance to fix something in Word 2007:

It's a constant niggling irritant that the text highlighter tool is the one
tool that (incorrectly, in my view) deselects the text it operates on when
clicked. For me, this invariably entails selecting the same text again after
applying the effect (or, if I think far enough ahead, applying other effects
such as bold or text colour before applying the highlight).

Surely this could be fixed so that all tools operate consistently, and I
don't have to adapt my behaviour to that of the program...

I would second this suggestion, though I guess the reasoning was that you
might not be able to tell the text had been highlighted, or might think the
wrong color had been applied (since selected text shows the inverse color),
if the text were still selected.

I understand where you're coming from, but the fact is that the Highlighter
tool has nothing to do with text formatting. It is a totally separate &
distinct convenience feature primarily for editing & proofing.

Look at it from another perspective - If it were treated as a *formatting*
feature the highlighting would be removed if one used the "Clear Formatting"
command or reformatted the text using a style that didn't include the same
highlighting, etc.
