Text in Header Table Cut off?

J

Joan NYC

I am ordinarily a pretty knowledgeable user of Word (once
upon a time MVP) and came across something I cannot get to
work on an assessment test for a job.

One of the criteria for this test was to follow their
directions to the T.

First of all this was in Word 2000 which I am the last
familiar having worked for many years in 97 and having XP
at home.

They wanted a one roll table in the header with the
following specs:

Left aligned table
Default table margins
Text: Times New Roman 16 Bold
Width: 9.58
Margins for page: Left 1:09/Right 1:09
Tab: 9:56 Right
Default tabs at .01

When I typed the text at the 9:56 tab the last letter was
cut off.

Am I missing something with the new table properties
dialog? I have customized my desktop here to do it the
old way but do try to use the new Table Properties as I am
testing for jobs and cannot always customize their
desktops.

Any help would be appreciated as I become obssessed with
some of this stuff and would like to be able to
troubleshoot this in the future

Thanks much

Have you tried changing the printer driver? I often find
that printing a PDF file vs printing to the office laser
often reveals funny little inconsistencies like that.

I am sure I would have found a way to get around it BUT I
was taking this "assessment" and they were very specific
about how to do it.

I would not have used the tab setting after this occurred.
I would have divided the cell into 2 (there was a logo on
the left and simply right aligned the text in the 2nd
column.

I tried it at home and the same thing happened

Thought I was missing something obvious or a setting
in "Table Properties" (which I hate, btw)

Thanks

G'Day Joan,

I can reproduce your result in Word Xp and Word 2000.

The width of the Table INCLUDES the cell margins - as a consequence,
the Right Tab is outside the Right Edge of the Table, and an extra SPACE
is necessary to see the 'required' text.

The issue is resolved by setting the Cell Margins to Zero!

Thanks for your reply

You are confirming what I actually thought

This test required that the margin be set at .08

There were several "tricks" on the test. I don't know if
they were actual "tricks" or errors on their part.

The reason I did not pass the test is that I did not
follow all their instructions.

The other thing that drove me crazy is that (in same
header table) they wanted it "Exactly 46 pts" but wanted
the Logo inserted on the left 52 pits.

Wanted to see if there was another setting I was missing
in "table properties"

Thanks again

joan

If the purpose of the test was to gain employment, run, do not walk, from
this prospective employer!
