Text in Text Box Shifted Left

What would cause the text area in a text box to be shifted left, so that
when someone starts to type in the text box, the first three characters are
hidden? From the 4th character on, the text appears normally in the text
box, but the first three are to the left of the leftmost edge of the text
box and are invisible. Even the calendar on the date picker control button
is shifted left and only the right edge is visible. I inherited this form
and was asked to "fix" it, but after an hour, I'm still scratching my head.
