text indenting when using columns

I am making a two column text document. Text is automatically indenting
on all lines after the first in a paragraph. Can I stop this?

thanks

Are you the same Ken Stone of Final Cut Pro fame?
If so, you deserve lots and lots of free support. I am already deeply
in your debt.

The first guess is that you have simply set the style you are using to
have a hanging indent.
Check that the same style hangs the first line of each paragraph even
when in single column mode.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, turn on rulers (with
View->Ruler) and fiddle with the blue triangles at the left of the
ruler. It is they which control the first and following line starts in
each paragraph. You will find the top triangle starts off a bit to the
left of the bottom one if I have guessed the cause correctly.

If it is not that simple, reply with details of which version of Word
you are using, and a bit more detail on how you set your columns up.

No. I'm not him. But thanks for the reply.

Hi Ken-

Elliott is right on track with his suggestion, but I thought I would
expand on it a little.

The triangles he refers to also include a square at the bottom of the
lower triangle. When you hover your pointer on them the tips boxes that
appear tell you their names but here is a little more on how they work.

Upper Triangle Marker controls 1st line indent and can be dragged
independently

Lower Triangle Marker controls "hanging indent" for any lines after the
1st in the paragraph. When you drag this, the square goes with it.

Square Marker moves both Upper & Lower Triangles and controls indent of
entire paragraph (all lines) from margin.

You can also control these settings in the menus. Click in the problem
paragraph & go to Format>Paragraph, Indents and Spacing. (This can vary
a little depending on which version of Word).

Also, if there is more than one paragraph to be adjusted, select them
all first & then change the settings so you don't have to do it
repeatedly.
