Text not aligning with right hand indent marker.

I run Word 97 and have a recent problem whereby any entered text overruns the
right hand indent marker by 2 cms exactly according to horizontal rule.
I can manipulate the text to somewhere near the marker (per document), by
altering settings by trial and error in (File / Page setup) but this is a
very temporary setting.
The left hand markers are unaffected in any way, i.e. operation and
functionability. I hope I've just pressed the wrong button.
I think not.
Cheers for now

Are you sure that the right indent is set to zero (in Format |
Paragraph, Indents and Spacing tab)?

Is it possible that the text is in a table cell?

Is the problem with existing documents only or with new ones as well?

Thankyou Stefan

Yes yes yes. Right on.
New documents seem to be OK but if I re-enter existing documents this is
when it happens.
I "have" been working with tables as a part of a course I'm doing at moment
but must admit I'm still at base level. (With Tables).
I'ts taking a bit of getting used to compared to Excel. Too many variables.

If you want to, I can take a look at the file. Send it to
(e-mail address removed).

Thankyou Stefan. Got on top of this problem (with your help) but have another
now
Gulp!!
Can't align text within "Word" table cells. (Top, Vertical, Bottom).
Have tried several angles to solve problem but text hangs in "Top" alignment
although still functions OK in this mode. More annoying than anything else.

Thanks for your help.

Check the paragraph formatting looking for Space Before/Space After and the
Line Spacing settings. Then check the Cell vertical alignment is set for
Top, Centre or Bottom as required.

Thanks Terry,

Have tried altering settings as you mentioned but not exactly sure what to
set Space Before|Space After settings to. The line spacing set to 1.5
I've noted the effects of the changes but still can't shift the position of
the text within the cell.
I've then retried cell text alignment settings both on "Tables menu" and
also by cell selection by right clicking same and then clicking on alignment.
This problem is not uniform within the same document i.e. will work O.K. in
some cells and not others. I'm sure it's me messing things up.
Hope this gives more clues.
Cheers for now.

Thanks Suzanne,

I have reset to your recommendation and now have a 'very' slight response
but only for figures, (approx 1/16" thru the three alignment settings). Text
remains static ?
Might have a go at brain surgery?
Cheers
Graham
Please advise on posting the follow-ups to newsgroup?

If a table row's height is set to Auto and the height of a given cell is
determined by the amount of text in the cell (that is, if the cell contains
the maximum amount of text--three lines, for example, if that's the most
text any cell in the row has), then the vertical alignment will be the same
at any of the three settings. The only time you'll see a difference is if
(a) the row is set to an exact height that is larger than the Auto height
would be or (b) the cell contains less text than others in the row.

The vertical alignment is also affected by graphics in the cell. Adding a
wrapped graphic, IIRC, makes the text cling to the top regardless of the
vertical alignment setting.

Yet another setting to consider is the Default Cell Margins (under Table
Properties, Table tab, Options). Set the Space Before/After to zero.

That should have been 2 separate statements.

Yet another setting to consider is the Default Cell Margins (under Table
Properties, Table tab, Options).

Under Format Paragraph, set the Space Before/After to zero and the line
spacing to zero. Then as Suzanne suggests, make sure the Row height of the
table is set to Exactly. After than, does the vertical alignment now work as
it should?

Well, I think Terry and Suzanne covered what I did not, in their
responses.

To send the file, just add it as an attachment to an ordinary email
message. Note that I may not have the time to look at it immediately,
though.
