Text not truly deleting in Word

Sam Cooke

Hi

I have found that when I delete text in a previously saved Word
document, then save and close the document and reopen it in TextEdit,
the deleted text is still visible, even though it no longer appears when
the document is opened in Word.

I have a vague memory of this being identified as a bug in Word for
Windows a while back and a patch being issued to fix it, but I haven't
been able to find any reference to this issue in the Word for Mac
knowledge base.

Can anyone please advise me how I can fix this?

I am using Mac OS X and Word X for Mac (v10.1.4), Service Release 1.

Thanks for any help you can give.
Regards
Sam

Hi Sam:

Umm... How do we say this gently? It's not a bug, it's user error :)

You either have tracked changes or fast saves enabled: you should turn both
OFF.

Tools>Track Changes and ensure that you have Track Changes while Editing
switched OFF, and Highlight Changes on Screen switched ON so that you can
see immediately if any changes remain in a document.

Word>Preferences>Save and disable "Allow Fast Saves" and enable "Always make
backup". Allow fast saves actually makes saves slower, but it also
preserves all the past 99 edits in the document for up to 10 saves, in case
you want to undo them. It also causes corrupt documents (and that's a
bug...).

Hope this helps

Duh! Well that will teach me to cast aspersions on this fine product!

I did indeed enable Track Changes on this document when I first
created it (it's an office manual for a client) and I didn't put 2 and 2
together, like how can Word track the chages if it can't store the
versions.

Thanks a lot for your help; I really was scratching my head over this.

OK, I'm off now to type out a hundred lines as a punishment - with
tracking switched off, of course :)

Regards
Sam
