Text on connecting lines

The text box for a connection line is sometimes located on the line and
other times it is located at some other place on the drawing at a distance
from the connection line. Does anyone know how Visio decides where to
locate the ext box?

We would like it to always be located on the line instead of some distance
from it because our solution places text (one or two characters) in the box
to identify the line as a certain type. When the text box is located away
from the line it is difficult to know the associated text for the line.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

My best understanding is this:

Visio parameterizes the connector as though it were a straight line - from 0
to 1, shall we say.

If the user moves the text to 25% along the length of the connector, then no
matter how the connector re-routes, Visio will put the text at 0.25 along
the path of the connector. Y locations are probably just perpendicular
offsets at wherever the x location finds itself.

The connector, as naturally dropped has the text ON the line, and it should
stay there. I'm not sure why yours has jumped off, but I suspect you have
meddled with the text positioning at some point where it looked okay, but
then caused problems on re-route. Hard to say from here.

What I do is create a modified connector master, where the connector is
straight. I then shove the text towards one end or the other (which is what
I happen to need) Now when I drop connectors and re-route, the text will be
towards one end of the connector, and still on the line.

Hope this helps,
